The Fishermen OPalamos
March 2022

Palamos, northwest Spain, is home to 23 commercial fishing boats - 18 of them trawlers that fish during the day, the rest going out at night. They mainly fish for blackberry rosefish, cuttlefish, scorpion fish, red mullet and prawns. Between 6:20 and 6:45 every weekday morning the boats race to leave the port's bottleneck exit - the sight of which one resident compares to the 'Formula 1 sprint start'. Once they're out they return mainly at 6pm, whereas the night boats start at 11pm and finish around 8am. Crews vary in size but generally range between 6 to 12 people. "It's a long and arduous day being out on the water, I love my job but I realise it's a unique one. I feel I know these men like the back of my hand. There's real camaraderie here - you have to have it or else the sea will gobble you up" Alfonso, 39.
